SEO Hack of the Week: Building Backlinks

Any agent who’s put time into optimizing their website and online content for SEO knows the struggle of getting your content in front of an audience. Many agents put a considerable amount of effort into their SEO optimization only to have their content go unnoticed. If that sounds like you, this week’s SEO hack will completely change the way you approach content writing and SEO in general.

This week, we’re showing you how to…

Use Backlinks to Boost Your SEO Efforts

First things first: What are backlinks?

Put simply, backlinks are links that point back to a specific website. When users engage with a site’s content or find it particularly useful, they’ll share it with other people, boosting the site’s SEO ranking in the process. Generally speaking, the more reputable links pointing to your website, the more authority Google will give you, so it’s a good idea to acquire as many backlinks as possible.

Before you start thinking about easy ways to secure backlinks, it’s important to know that not all backlinks are created equal. If you receive a backlink from a website that Google doesn’t find reputable or relevant to your content, you may be at risk of hurting your SEO efforts. Google is pretty adept at finding out when someone has bought or traded something in order to receive a backlink, and websites that are guilty of this type of backlinking deception will find themselves devalued by Google.

How do I start building a Google-friendly backlinking strategy?

Finding appropriate backlinking opportunities for your website can be tricky, so we’ve pulled together three general rules to follow for maximum backlinking success.

1. Link to reputable, knowledgeable websites in your content

It may seem simple, but the act of linking to a reputable, relevant website in your content is immensely important to your overall SEO efforts. Every time you create a new blog post on your site, come up with a short list of well-written, highly regarded articles to support your content. Linking to another page doesn’t have the same impact on SEO as receiving a link from another page, but by linking to a carefully selected outside source, you’re indicating to Google that your content is relevant and well-researched.

2. Create original, informative content

We’ve spoken before about the importance of creating and maintaining a blog: After all, it’s a relatively simple (and free) way to create great SEO-boosting content. To get the most bang for your blog, it’s important to make sure that your content is original and relevant to your audience. Not only will they be excited to learn more about a topic that’s pertinent to them, they’ll also be more compelled to share your content, resulting in more links pointing back to your website.

3. Sign up for HARO

This one’s a little less straightforward than the other two methods we’ve mentioned. One of the best ways to acquire excellent backlinks is through a mention by a major newspaper or publication. Enter HARO (Help a Reporter Out): A daily email list featuring reporters who need their questions answered by experts.

As a real estate agent, you’re more than qualified to answer any real estate-related questions, especially those concerning your local market. It may feel like a longshot, but by checking through these daily emails, you may wind up connecting with a reporter from a nearby paper, resulting in an online mention that will do wonders for your SEO efforts.
